My cat just passed away from cancer.. My question is, If my boyfriend spends a lot of time here, can it be carried from my house to his cat? Or must it be transmitted through sharing of litter, food and water?
actually cat cancer IS contagious, i just didnt know if it was transferable between households.

Cancer in not contagious at all, cancer happens when cells multiply faster than normal, and you cant catch it as its mostly genetic, one of my late cats had cancer of the throat and my other cat was not affected and i didn’t expect her to be and she shared a dish and litter ect,

so no your boyfriend wont carry carry it to his house, you cant carry overgrowing cells its a fact so relax, the only thing that would give his cat cancer is its genetic make up,please don’t worry when there is no need too,you have just lost your cat so don’t upset yourself more,

only cancer of the blood(Leukemia) is catching but the cats would have to have blood to blood contact, the chances of that are slim.

Cancer isn’t contagious, it’s usually something you develop from outside sources like exposure to radiation, smoking, etc. I don’t know much about animal cancer but it shouldn’t be too different from human cancer. And I’m sorry about your loss.

Where did you hear that cat cancer is contagious?

I’ve worked at a vet clinic for a while and I’ve NEVER heard of a case of contagious cancer…

Are you talking about Feline Leukemia? If yes – it only transfers from cat to cat. You don’t catch it like the common cold by touching/casual contact.

If you’re talking about an actual tumor – it’s NOT contagious. No worries.

If ur talking about Feline Leukemia–that is contagious. From cat to cat they would have to share food and water bowls and groom each other and even still some cats can be carriers of it and show no outwards signs and other cats can get it and die from it. That.s the only thing I can think of that is contagious.

Is human cancer contagious? Of course not. Cancer is not contagious. It is caused by a cell mutating and then multiplying. Why would it be different in cats than in humans?

There are other illnesses that can be transferred between cats–FIV and feline leukemia come to mind–but unless two cats share a household, it’s not contagious. It’s why people who have cats with one of those disorders cannot adopt another cat who is FIV negaive or doesn’t have leukemia.

You might want to ask your vet; s/he will be able to advise you better.

And I am sorry for your loss. I know how painful it is to lose a furbaby.
